Last week my five year old daughter Kelsey was standing behind me on my office chair as I was working on the blog. She was playing beauty shop with my hair and asking questions. Little background first, there were only three of us home. The baby was napping and Kelsey and I were in the same room. Then we had this conversation.
Kelsey: “Mom, do you hear that?”
Me: “No, its probably the radio.”
Kelsey: “No, I hear a man’s voice.”
Me: “Um, ok Kels”
Kelsey: “I think it was Jesus”
Me:” Ok “
Kelsey:” That is what Jesus’ voice would sound like “
Kelsey: whispering to herself, I cannot understand or hear her
Me: “Kelsey? “
Kelsey: “Mom, that was Jesus, He said He is taking me home today. “
Me: shivering, “what? “
Kelsey: “He said its time for me to go home today, that is what He said Mommy.”
Hearing this from my five year old honestly freaked me out a bit, not because I think she was hearing voices or anything like that, but because it was so innocent and shocking at the same time. Kelsey is aware that this is not “our home” Hebrews 13:14 and we are only passing through. We frequently discuss heaven because of her brother David. She was only two when he died and has many questions.
I have to admit I did think what if today had been her day, you know, to go home? As a mom, nobody wants to say good bye to a child. Been there done that. Holding your child’s lifeless body in your arms is nothing I want to go through again. However, knowing that my son David is with the Lord is extremely comforting and by chance it were to happen again I would take comfort in His words.
But this got me thinking about being ready to go home. Mark 13 states “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard! Be alert ! You do not know when that time will come. It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.
“Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’ ”
We must be ready in a moment’s notice it is going to happen. Like a thief in the night, He will return. The Second Coming is when Jesus Christ will return to earth in fulfillment of His promises and to fulfill the prophecies made about Him. Jesus Himself promised, “At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory” (Matthew 24:30). Revelation 19:11-12 proclaims this about the Second Coming, “I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself.”
What about you? What do you need to do? I know I need this reminder often to keep myself on my toes.
We have all sinned and fallen short of His glory. I want to be spared the judgement due to me. I want that peace of knowing where I am going.
